The apparitions didn’t attack, but their presence was no less threatening. They whispered words of doubt and despair, their voices like nails scraping against glass. Lucas froze as one figure took on a familiar shape. It was the face of a young woman he had failed to save during Victor’s reign. “Why didn’t you protect us?” the apparition hissed, its voice filled with anguish. “You promised to keep us safe.”
