Besides, it would me mighty rude of us to have him come here and then turn him away.” Melody’s lower lip protruded forward as she contemplated his words. “You said it was haunted. Now you say if it is haunted. Which is it?” “I don’t rightly know for sure. I’m not an expert with ghosts.” Adam grabbed the coffee pot and a cup. “I say we give the guy a chance. Lord knows, I’m not worth a salt when it comes to spirits.” Melody looked at her father with raised brow. “Do you think it’s haunted too, father?”

ZEPHYR’S POV “Yes, there are two of our ghosts who are not with us now.” “Do they have names?” I asked him. “N….” He paused, rethinking his reply again. Then he said. “We go by one name, Ghost. Any other name aside this, I am unaware of it. I know it seems undutiful for me to not have this simple information but sometimes our ghosts tend to break out of character and hence get themselves into scenarios that end up leaving them with souvenirs like names, tattoos, tags.”

He drove with purpose, and I, like a phantom shadow, drifted along in his wake. I followed him as he made his rounds in a department store, buying things he had never once considered buying for me. It wasn't hard to see the distinction between love and indifference. My ghostly form seemed to grow heavier with every step, weighted down by the bitterness of seeing the man I had loved so deeply pamper another woman so thoroughly.

Ghost’s voice, weak but alive: “…Still here…”

The ghost had spoken. And he was real.

Every step tightened the pressure behind his sternum, pulling him deeper. “You always hated this place,” Vex’s voice echoed suddenly, smooth and amused. “Said it smelt like ghosts.” Riven stopped. The voice came from everywhere and nowhere—reverberating through tunnels, bleeding through walls. “Funny thing,” Vex continued. “Turns out ghosts don’t leave. They just change shape.” Riven’s jaw set. “Show yourself.” Laughter rippled through the dark. Lights flickered to life one by one, revealing a massive junction chamber ahead—old control panels, broken signal boards, and cables hanging like exposed veins.

"Elle, you need to see this.” Ghost calls out. I push the knife a little harder into the Collector’s shoulder before jumping to my feet. I give him one last look before turning my back on him. His fingers have stopped twitching; even if I take the knife out, the damage is most likely permanent, and he’s no threat to me anymore. I see Ghost has walked behind the counter; he has a computer in front of him and the glow of the screen is lighting him up, making him look like some kind of otherworldly ghost. I kind of get the name but it seems more like a punishment to me, like his parents judged him on how he looked when he was born and decided to brand him with the name forever.

By the time Richard arrived, the funeral was almost over. Everyone who had come to say goodbye was gone. Only I remained. I wanted a little more time with Chloe. She'd always been clingy. And she was afraid of the dark. "Richard, see? I told you Selena was lying. If this were really a funeral, why is nobody here? This is obviously another stunt to get you to come home." Grace's voice cut through the silence. Richard's face darkened.
