"Joyce!" The girl's face lit up instantly. She looked toward the voice and shouted, "Daddy, Mommy's back!" The man froze when he saw Tabitha. "Tabitha?" She studied the stranger, trying to place him, but came up empty. Her memories in this world stopped ten years ago. Even if she had known him before, ten years apart had blurred those memories beyond recognition. The man caught her blank expression and was somewhat disappointed. He reintroduced himself. "It's been a while. I'm Victor Gardner, two years ahead of you in college. We were in the same club, remember?"

I pulled my feet up onto the sofa and hugged my knees as Gideon gripped the windowsill and tried to find the words to tell me about his memories. “I had a friend.” He said slowly, “Another wolf boy. His name was Malakai. We were close in age, and although my parents didn’t want me playing with the other village children, he and I would sneak out into the woods to run around together. As I got older, we had to be more discrete, and we had a secret code we would use to leave messages for each other.” Gideon turned to look at me, and his eyes were full of fury and sorrow.

Gideon, one of the kidnappers, crawled to the phone and answered with a simple “hello.” The voice on the other end, male and authoritative, asked, “Did you manage to execute the job?” Gideon looked at his scratched hands and face, signs of recent turmoil, and hesitated before answering. “There was a problem,” he finally admitted. The male voice demanded details. “What kind of problem?” Gideon glanced at his two fallen comrades on the floor, dead, their bodies marked by claws, and began to explain with a certain uncertainty in his voice. “The kids... they're not normal.”

I don’t know who this person is, but he or she is pissing me off. Thankfully it is Friday, and I can be home for the next two days. I talked with Doug the day after our meeting and asked about a guard for Everly. He thought that was a good idea. He told me that he had the perfect guy and would call me back after talking with him. I am guessing that if this is one of his friends or a guy who works for him, he knows Everly and will agree without hesitation. The guy that Doug sent started yesterday. His name is Giovanni, or Gio for short. He and Everly seem to get along ok so far. I was concerned, considering he is only 25, but Doug told me that there is no one he trusts more than Gio.

"That bitch needed to die to keep her mouth shut for good. I set the archive fire, and I arranged the helicopter malfunction too." Gavin and I exchanged a look. We had everything we needed. "You raised me to be a fake heiress, and now you're trying to get rid of me too?" Tears welled in her eyes as her voice trembled. Gideon sneered and suddenly grabbed her by the throat. "You were just a pawn. Now, you're useless." At that critical moment, Gavin and security rushed into the room and slammed Gideon to the floor, saying in an ice-cold tone, "Gideon, every one of your crimes has been recorded."

This made Gideon Codd very nervous. He tapped again on the door, irritated that it had not yet been answered. Didn’t these people realise how important he was? The people of Dorsal Finn knew. Oh, yes. He’d made sure of that over the years. People like the infernal Maud Postlethwaite and that young Beecham tearaway had constantly tried to undermine his authority, but most held him in esteem, coming to him when it really mattered. One such person had come to him recently, which was the reason he now stood on the doorstep of a converted scout hut at 8am, the sea breeze smattering his hat with spray.

Back then, Gideon was still clean-shaven, idealistic, someone who believed data could save the world. Now he lived in the hull of an abandoned cargo trawler dry-docked on the outskirts of the port. The ship was rusted, tilted, as if caught mid-surrender to the earth. But its insides were reinforced with lead-lined walls and hardware that buzzed low like bees in the bone. Gideon greeted us at the edge of the dock, his eyes hidden behind mirrored lenses, his hands gloved despite the heat. “You brought the storm with you,” he said.
