“I’m not afraid.”Evelyn forced the words out, though her throat was painfully tight.
The glowing eyes brightened in the dark.“You are.”
Her voice softened into something almost sympathetic, and almost gentle, “Fear is familiar to us.”
The lights blasted suddenly white, violent, blinding.
Evelyn shielded her face. When the glare settled, the room came back into focus in a fractured, shuddering way like reality itself was glitching, cables hung from the ceiling in torn coils, metal panels lay scattered across the floor, screens bled blue static.
