“M-my mother was a human. My father was a goblin. I’m a halfling. Please don’t kill me! I just want to leave that place. It wasn’t easy to escape from becoming a slave!” Confused but hesitant to believe Zen, the goblins started whispering. The confused leader also scratched his head. Although there were many kinds of monster-human halflings, he had never heard of a goblin halfling before. Yes, sometimes goblins will force pretty humans to become their brides. However, most pretty humans don’t live long enough to bear children. Could Zen be a special case? “You!” the leader eventually decided. “Are you not siding with the humans?”

I turned. The mirror glowed faintly in the dark, like a window lit from another world. The woman inside it moved—not like a ghost, but like a prisoner pacing her cage. She pointed toward the wall. I followed her gaze—toward a painting. A young bride in colonial lace. Her eyes held secrets. Her smile… defeat. The name beneath: > “Anindya Damar, 1893 – Disappeared on Her Wedding Night.” The voice returned, stronger. > “The curse feeds on brides. On purity. On memory. But one bride... was never forgotten.”

Lucianne’s thumb stroked the back of his small hand, and the sensation comforted him. The bridesmaids emerged in a mix of vampires, hybrids, wolves and lycans before Gerella finally came into view. Toby’s eyes shone as he sighed in happiness at the sight of his beautiful bride in the white, lace dress that hugged her figure with a bouquet of gardenias in her hands.

The grinding metal sound scraped against my nerves. My eyes widened. "My lady, I'm your husband… Shouldn't we be spending our wedding night together?" A snort of laughter came from the players' table. A muscular man named James Gibson shook his head and said, "Never seen someone this stupid. You walked right into it. The ghost bride needs a human sacrifice, sure. However, she also needs a husband. And any player who becomes her husband gets chopped into pieces. She hates men the most." I had just escaped one death trap and walked straight into another!

The other maids quickly joined in, showering Anna with one compliment after another. "Alright, alright..." Anna's cheeks turned crimson. "Let's head to the ceremony." She was growing embarrassed by all the praise. *** Anna and Alex's wedding blessing ceremony was held inside a small cave overlooking the sea. Robert and the citizens of the kingdom were already waiting there. Anna's heart pounded hard. Nervous. As she walked toward the cave, the people welcomed her with warm smiles and heartfelt congratulations. She had expected the cave to be dimly lit. Instead, it was bathed in a soft, radiant glow.

"Cameras love a nervous bride." We reached the altar. The officiant opened his book. Two hundred guests fell silent at once, and I could hear my own pulse in my ears louder than anything else in that room. "Damon Wrexley", the officiant said, "will you have this woman to be your wedded wife, to live together in the holy bond of marriage?" Damon's eyes found mine. Something flickered there, cold and final, and his lips parted. "I don't." The room held its breath with me.

The old woman's smile widened, revealing yellowed teeth as she spoke. "Mr. Ballard!" Rose hastily took two steps backward to where Sebastian was. Nina stepped forward and stood in front of Sebastian and Rose. "Old woman, you are very skilled. If I hadn't come today, you would really have exhausted them to death." As she spoke, red bolts of light shot forth from Nina's eyes. The old woman slowly disappeared in the red glow. "Wha—" Rose stared in shock. "She's not a person. She's a type of goblin," Nina said coldly.
