I leaned my head against his shoulder, my eyes squinting against the glare of the gold leafed pillars that surrounded the square. A man stepped out from the shadows of the high temple. He did not wear furs or tunics: he was draped in robes of liquid gold that seemed to flow and shimmer with their own internal current. This was Helios, the Sun Alpha. He was a being of pure solar energy, his presence radiating a heat so intense that the air around him warped in a series of wavy and liquid mirages. His eyes were not amber or silver; they were two white-hot stars that seemed to pierce through my very marrow.
