Eventually, she stopped asking.
One afternoon, while dragging water through the Upper Tier, she paused outside a classroom. The heavy stone doors stood slightly ajar. Inside, pale apprentice gods sat rigidly at black desks under the severe gaze of an instructor tracing glowing symbols across a slate of crystal.
"...The First Divine War reshaped the heavens..." the priest intoned. The apprentices repeated the mantra in chilling unison.
The girl stood silently in the shadows. She watched the glowing shapes, listening intently as the children chanted. Her mind, desperate to make sense of her prison, began linking the sharp lines to the spoken sounds.
