I spent every second alternating between the villagers and the man I loved, praying that the moon would show mercy.
The first rays of dawn began to bleed through the cracks in the wooden walls, casting long, pale fingers of light across the dirt floor. I was wiping sweat from Elias’s brow when the heavy door creaked open.
The village chief stood there, flanked by three of his strongest men. His face was a mask of cold stone.
"The sun is up, healer," the chief said, his voice echoing in the small space.
I stood up, my legs cramping, and wiped my hands on my apron. "Chief. It’s early."
