Me: “Uh… that’s literally what we just watched.” His face twisted in disbelief. Aaron: “But… that’s not how it should be! The evil force is supposed to be destroyed and at least a few people survive. That’s the way it goes!” I stood, absentmindedly collecting our plates. Me: “Not all stories have a happy ending, nerd. In some, evil wins.” His eyes widened. I chuckled on my way to the sink. Me: “Goodnight, nerd.” I walked into the room , tying my hair into a ponytail, ready to lay down, when I heard a faint knock.I Paused. It came again. I went to the door , opening it . Aaron stood there, eyes fixed on the floor.

Adrian pulled into an underground garage, the heavy metal gate shutting behind us automatically. “This place is safe,” he said. “Reinforced. Off-grid. Only three people know it exists.” We stepped out of the car. The silence in the garage felt unnatural, like the world above had vanished and left us in a different realm entirely. Adrian opened a door that led to a sleek, modern space lined with security screens and digital maps displaying red markers scattered across the city. “Sit.” His tone left no room for refusal. I sat. Adrian paced once, twice, then turned to face me. The tension rolling off him bordered on dangerous.

Then came bedtime. Reasonable. Peanut already asleep in the nursery. God. Tiny and peaceful. Fair. Meanwhile Lily lay beneath her blankets. Reasonable honestly. Mr. Buttons tucked safely beneath one arm. God. Adrian sat beside her bed. Fair. The usual routine. Reasonable. A story. A goodnight kiss. God. Then sleep. Fair. Or at least that was the plan. Reasonable. Then Lily spoke. God. "Dada?" Fair. There it was. Reasonable honestly.

I grabbed my pouch and put my hand on his shoulder and tapped it lightly. “Goodnight, Trevor.” “Goodnight, Jill.” I looked at his face before I motioned at my bodyguard. On the way home, I replayed our conversation and felt sad for unknown reason.

“Have you looked in the mirror lately? It looks like someone tore your ass off and stitched it on your face. That’s an abomination. My pizza is delicious.” “Boys, boys. Seriously now.” Mr. Midnight—ooooh, that’s also good—clicks his tongue at his bickering guards. Goons. Lackeys. Soldiers? Whatever they are. “We can get the pizza. Just relax. No one is an abomination. I’m hungry too, so I’ll get to the good parts.” His black eyes turn and land on me, so soft and deep they’re like falling into a ball pit, but those balls are his eyes. Creepy. “I’m about to tell Miss Azalea White—”

He sent another message when I didn’t reply back. ~＞"Dozing? About to sleep now?" He inquired. ~＞"Yes please." I sent. ~＞"Oh dear, that's really fast. Coco sat with her hands cradling a mug, her face creased with emotions. She was okay. He stopped and met their gazes and got the distinct impression that he'd interrupted something. "Hello, ladies." He knelt and scooped up the packets. "Hey, what time is it?" Coco slid off her chair and turned toward the adjacent wall. "Time for all good little girls to go to bed." The other woman braced her hands on the table and pushed up with a groan. Paxton finished collecting the sugar packets and set the container on the top. He glanced at the woman. Was this Mrs. P?

The weight of our situation pressed down, heavy and suffocating. It was then, amidst the debris of a collapsed building, that Kelly unearthed it – a small, tarnished silver locket. It lay half-buried in the dust, its surface scratched and worn, yet somehow managing to retain a faint, almost ethereal glow. We gathered around it, the faint glimmer a stark contrast to the surrounding darkness. Inside, nestled amongst the faded velvet lining, was a single, faded photograph.
