He stepped closer, and I could feel the shift in energy—how the tension thinned, softened, made room for something a little more playful.
“Still,” he said, “you surprised me.”
I looked up, meeting his eyes—and instantly regretted it.
His expression changed, lit with amusement as his gaze roamed over my face. “Wait a minute.”
I blinked. “What?”
He grinned. “You’re blushing.”
“No, I’m not,” I said too quickly, pressing a hand to my cheek as if I could will the warmth away.
“Oh, you definitely are,” he said, laughing under his breath. “This is the first time I’ve seen you blush. Ever. I should’ve taken a picture.”
