Something within her leapt to meet it. The darkness was grainy, empty — gilded in small pools by candlelight and the thin shafts of moonlight that penetrated the stained-glass windows. Rose smiled, feeling disappointed. Wishful thinking. Too many vampire novels. Anne Rice and Freda Warrington had a lot to answer for. Then the shadows moved. The breath caught in Rose’s throat. The base notes, however, are very peculiar and not quite human. Sorry. I should probably explain: all human scents have base notes of blood, sweet and savoury and alluring. Vampires have a different base scent, one of shadow and danger. This scent does smell of blood, but in a strange and off-putting way, like how the sweet scents of edible flowers or artificial cherry flavouring never smell as appetising as the soft fragrance of honey. (Not that this scent smells floral or like cherries, of course, just that it smells only superficially of sustenance.)
