Falling For The Enemy
I still feel powerless at times, unable to help her.
“Doing well. Seeing Grace later.”
Smiling, I fall into step beside her, and we head back toward the house. Grace is my father’s sister, the antithesis of my mother in every way. While my mother can be stern, Grace is gentle. A Buddhist who loves gardening and practices yoga every morning, she’s a positive influence. I still hope my mother’s sharp edges will soften, but after all this time, I doubt it. The only people she’s ever been tender and nurturing to are Lilly and Levi. Perhaps she sensed they needed it when I showed up at Thanksgiving years ago with two additional mouths to feed and no prior notice.
