We laughed—quiet, relieved, like we’d both been holding our breath since yesterday.
“Come on,” he said, standing up. “Café. My treat. You look like you need caffeine and sugar and zero parents.”
“God yes.”
He pushed my chair across the quad, dodging clusters of freshmen hauling boxes and parents taking too many photos. The café was tucked between the library and the student union—glass walls, string lights, mismatched chairs, the kind of place that charged six dollars for oat milk. We ordered inside: iced vanilla latte for me (extra shot because pain meds make me foggy), black cold brew for him (because he’s a masochist), and a shared plate of cinnamon-su
