When people used to think of shifters they would assume it was a human-wolf hybrid that could change with the full moon. But the humans were very wrong. Shifters are always born human and between their fifteenth and sixteenth birthday, their body would change and transform into their true race. While there are werewolves, shifters could also be many other things. Vampires, werewolves, and witches were by far the most common, while sirens, fairies, and the dreaded angels of the night were more uncommon among the shifting race. The most rare was called the arch angels.

This guy was absolutely bat-sh*t crazy. The king continues despite my silence. "Shifters, like wolves, also have mates. They mate for life and share a strong bond with their mates. A shifter will know when he's met his." I have no idea where he's going with this. "I knew when I saw you, Hera," he says carefully. "What?" I say. "I knew you were my mate."

When she finally looked up, her eyes were huge—not scared, just stunned. “She’s not just a wolf,” Eidara said, words slow and heavy. “Her blood’s got a piece of something old in it. Something lost. Like... a shadow of the Flameborn.” Evangeline blinked, totally blank. “The hell is that supposed to mean?” “A line of shifters—elemental, mostly fire. Hunted nearly to extinction in the Old Purge. Too dangerous, even for their own,” Eidara replied, almost absent, eyes still a little wild.

“I’m just glad we haven’t been giving the new ones any wolfsbane. Who knows? Maybe they’ll learn to control it on their own.” Gray nods and offers Bo a wide grin. “Maybe. They’ll be a hell of a lot better than us if they do.” We all know the truth though. Lycanthropy is a curse. There is no way to control it. Not on the full moon. “Come,” Bo says, knocking me out of the dooming thought of our near future. He puts a hand on my back, lightly guiding me to start walking. “Alazaer is down by twin hills, waiting for the others to come back,” he tells us.

In the end, they moved into Bianca's parents' rented two-bedroom. Seven people squeezed inside with barely room for luggage. Bianca and Lila started fighting almost immediately. Lila called Bianca useless; Bianca called Lila a freeloader. When Helen's migraines flared, Bianca's mother told her to wait at a public clinic. Without my doctors, Gregory's blood pressure sent him to the emergency room. Without my tuition payments, Lila was removed from private school. Ethan's company fired him too. Customs work runs on trust. No one wanted client accounts handled by a man whose wedding funding had been pulled at the altar while he owed his ex-fiancee a mountain of debt.

They began to **change**. Their fur turned into green, crystalline needles. Their eyes turned into hollow voids of emerald light. They grew in size, their bodies twisting into grotesque, insectoid versions of themselves. They were no longer wolves; they were "Hive-Drones," bound to the will of the ship above. "They’re turning our own people against us," General Vance growled, reaching for her sidearm. "It’s not just the shifters," Marcus said, pointing at a second monitor.

There’s no sign of him, and I definitely can’t tell if the stone is still lying in the dark underbrush somewhere. The growling intensifies behind me, letting me know that the battle is back on. A tangle of snarling wolves and shadow shifters rolls over the ground, heading right toward me and Frost. I leap over him to run interference, latching onto a large black wolf’s ear and yanking with everything I have. He whines and falls to the ground in an attempt to alleviate the pain, but he isn’t fast enough to escape Kian’s claws. Kian nearly takes off his head with one vicious swipe. The shifter gurgles as blood pools inside his severed throat, slowly drowning him in his own fluids.

"It’s a Nanitic-Infection. The Shadow is using the Alabaster technology to rewrite the cellular structure of the shifters. He’s turning them into 'Hardware'. Emma, if they get too close to the Spire, they stop being people. They become parts of the machine." I looked toward the pier. The vanguard—Magnus, Runa, and Damon—were standing their ground, but they were being swarmed by "Grave-Sentinels." These weren't bone-beasts; they were shifters who had been "Optimized." Their skin was a dull, metallic grey, and their eyes were glowing with a sterile, red light. "We have to break the Spire's transmitter," I said, my voice steady. "If we kill the signal, the protocol collapses."

I start to fall but Grayson and William quickly cage me and sandwich me between them. "Didn't think you would break me the first time." I tease them in a whispering voice. They both laugh and its music to my ears. "We plan to each time." Grayson whisper-growl into my ear and I feel my legs become even more weak. People scatter in every direction, tripping over one another and falling, calling in panicked voices and frightened cries to separated family members, and other shifters start transitioning in bewildered response to our alarm. Launched like a missile from somewhere behind Darby, a large black and white blur flies towards the greasy vampire without warning. Catching the filthy skeletal monster by the throat, the force of it knocks them away from Darby and there’s a loud smack and a shrill screech as the vampire’s body hits the ground.
