“I am.” Behind them, the warship loomed. Broken. Cracking. Dying. A deep rumble echoed from within it. Then another. The structure began to collapse inward, sections falling into the ocean as the massive vessel finally gave in to the damage it had taken. Emma stared at it, wide-eyed. “It’s going down…” Victor exhaled slowly. “About time.” Lewis didn’t look at the ship for long. His focus returned to Elizabeth. Her breathing had slowed, but the strain was still there. The cold water didn’t help.

Kaelor collapsed onto Aradaa’s back, his literal weight a grounding force as the ship began to vibrate with the force of the jump. They lay there, limbs tangled, the salt of their tears and sweat mixing on the floor. "We have to... move," Aradaa whispered, his voice shaking. Kaelor didn't move. He held him tighter. "Let the ship fly itself for a minute." "Warning: Gravitational Shear approaching critical levels." The Gaea’s voice—a harmonic echo of the Mother-Code—snapped them back to the reality of the void. Aradaa scrambled to his feet, pulling on his shredded tunic. Kaelor stood beside him, his amber eyes fixed on the viewscreen.

My body jerked against the cuff as the Odyssey slammed against something hard and began spiralling into space again. Space… we were out… and we were going down. Not zooming through nothingness–down. Gravity. I clenched my jaws as the space surrounding the ship suddenly vanished, replaced with land–red, crusty land. The ship tilted down, then dipped before dropping hard like stone. The gravity was stronger than earth's. “We’re falling!” Kael yelled, his voice cutting through the ringing in my ears. “Brace your–”

"Zack, get the goddamn bird in position! The floors are turning into fucking soup!" Victor’s boots sank into the obsidian tiles. The stone wasn't breaking; it was liquefying, a thick, black sludge rising over his ankles. He adjusted his grip on Elodie, her head lolling against his shoulder. Her skin was cold, the color of wet chalk. Every breath she took sounded like a rattle in a tin can. "I’m trying, Vic! The gravity is shifting every three seconds! The ship won’t stabilize!" Zack’s voice was a jagged mess of static through the earpiece. "The kids... they’re pulling the whole damn sky down!"

The vibration of the ship made my grip on the taffrail tighter. Some pirates slid down when the ship almost sank. It shrieked as it quivered with the sound of a thunderstorm. The screams of those who fell to the sea enveloped my ears. Aggressive whirlwinds came approaching nonstop. The tides shivered while it kept banging the ship. Kylo rolled down toward me with knitted brows. She tightened her grip on the railing beside me. The ship made a sudden movement that shook all of us. It surprised Kylo enough to let go of the railings, but I caught her right hand in panic.

Rise. The water around the ship exploded. Huge columns of seawater shot up on either side of the Nightshade, towering twenty feet above the deck. They didn't fall back down. They hovered there, defied gravity, held in place by sheer will. The sailors froze. Vane dropped his apple. Saoirse turned her hand. The columns of water curved inward, forming a shimmering, liquid cage over the deck. The water roiled and hissed, threatening to crash down and crush them all.

The air vibrates with thunder, each clap shaking the very water around me. I struggle to stay afloat, coughing and spluttering, trying to make sense of the nightmare unfolding before me. Another ship, claimed by the Cursed Gulf. Another sacrifice to the Sea of Storms, destined to rest at the bottom with countless others. The mast, now broken, drifts by against the tide.

It seemed only a small portion of the ship remained above water. Then, endless splashes of water continuously battered the ship from all directions. For some time, all Noir and the other experts could hear were the splashes against the ship. This continued for many seconds. Finally, the waves from all directions began to lose strength. The buoyancy of the ship lifted it back up. However, no one was relieved because that was just the appetizer. It was not even worth mentioning. In front of them, towering tentacles that reached to the sky like pillars came crashing down. Each tentacle was thicker than several adults combined, with lumps and wrinkles that made one shudder.

The gravity well inverted, creating a localized vacuum that sucked the air out of my lungs. ​“Into the ship!” I roared. ​I grabbed Winnie’s hand and dragged her toward the loading ramp. Thorne was already sprinting up the slope, his face pale and his breath coming in ragged gasps. We dove into the hull of the Sky-Whale just as the implosion reached its breaking point. ​A shockwave of pure kinetic energy slammed into the ship, lifting the sixty-ton freighter off the quartz shelf as if it were a toy. The metal groaned, the rivets popping like champagne corks, and then everything went black as we were buried under a mountain of falling water.

Meilin whispered, her voice barely audible over the thunder of the falling debris. Above the Northern Ridge, the Command Ship Vesta was descending. It wasn't a controlled landing. Its stabilizers were firing sporadically, sending plumes of violet smoke into the air as it fought a losing battle against the Earth’s gravity. "They're all going to die," Leo said. He stood in the mud of his front yard, holding his broken brother Julian in his arms. The boy was breathing, but his eyes were empty—a vessel drained of its ego by the weight of Leo’s truth.
