When I pushed open the door, I immediately noticed something different. There was a book under the stone bench where Rhea and I usually sat. She did this occasionally. She left things for me to find without explanation or note. It could be herbs sometimes, or small crystals she said would help me sleep. But this time it was a book. I picked it up to look at. The cover was dark green leather. The title was stamped in faded gold letters: Bloodline Magic and the Lunar Covenant: A Practitioner's Study.

It was empty, and the pages were made of thick, handcrafted materials. I thanked her, and I could see pride and something else in her eyes, like fear or worry. I shook my head to get rid of the thoughts; I must have been overthinking.

I grabbed a few and tucked them under my arm, climbing with my free hand. When I reached the highest shelf, I pulled out a thick book with a green cloth cover. The title was embossed in gold: “Medicinal Flora and Fauna of the Northern Territories”. Perfect. “This one looks good,” I called down to Nora. She grinned up at me. “Can you get that blue one too? Next to it?” Nodding, I reached for the blue book she indicated, stretching up on my tiptoes. My fingers brushed the spine but it was a little far. I had to lean to the side to reach it, my tongue poking out in concentration.

Harry began to protest before a butterfly, out of nowhere, appeared before their eyes.
