“This is just for Moonstone. Now hush.” I couldn’t tell him the truth. That his father’s choices had left a wound too deep to ignore. That trust didn’t come with shared blood, not anymore. The High Ridge was windswept and raw, perched on the spine of the Moonstone lands like a crown. Here, the trees thinned out entirely, giving way to bare rock and hardy grasses that clung to cracks in the stone. I'm heading to the grounds now though.” I started to walk past him, but his voice stopped me. “That's not why I'm here, Alpha.” “Why then?” I paused mid-step, casting a sharp look back over my shoulder. “We have some survivors in the pack territory.” “Survivors?” My eyebrows furrowed. “From where? Are they outcasts?” “They came from the Stoneridge pack. Apparently, their pack was razed to the ground last night. These few managed to escape.” That hit hard. Stoneridge was the most powerful pack in the region after Redridge. For it to be wiped out without us even getting wind of it was alarming.

My mother swooned over Alexander and invited us in. We followed them to the dining room. I looked around, the modern interior of the house was completely different from when I last saw it. The house had been completely renovated.

NARRATIVE POV. Sheriff McKenna stood in front of the house listed on the card in his hand, checking the number to be sure he had the right place. 1388 Moonstone Drive, Greystone, CA 09101. He looked up at the burgundy cobblestone cottage, sitting alone in the middle of what felt like no man’s land. On his drive here, he hadn’t passed a single home, only a few scattered stores along the road. Down the street, there was only an empty filling station in sight, its neon lights flickering blue and red against the darkening evening. Beyond that, nothing stretched for miles, but a lonely road lined with winter-struck trees, their branches dry and bare, as if withering away.

Against my better judgment, I nodded and allowed him to lead me away from the fountain, out of the house, and to his waiting car. The drive was mostly silent, with Lucas occasionally glancing over at me with an expression I couldn't quite decipher. As we traveled further from the Grey estate, my curiosity grew. Where could he possibly be taking me? Finally, after what felt like both an eternity and no time at all, the car came to a halt. I blinked, taking in my surroundings with growing wonder.
