THE CHOSEN ONE
The symbols embroidered on the sleeves shimmered in the torchlight circles, spirals, and the mark of a Wolf: a semicircular arc with teeth pointing upward, like the creature was about to howl.
She wore a necklace of delicate bones that clinked as she walked. In her hands, she carried a drum stretched with animal hide, painted with ancient symbols. I saw a tree its roots touching the dead, its branches rising to the sky. At the center, the Wolf with starry eyes. Other symbols surrounded it: the sun, the wind, the figure of a woman with open arms and a serpent coiled around her neck.
“The ritual has begun,” she said. “The Guardian wishes to hear you.”
