Seraphine’s POV Elder Mara lay on the floor. Her body was twisted at unnatural angles, her arms were bent backward and fingers curled into rigid claws. Her eyes stared sightless at the ceiling and black veins crawled across her skin with dark residue clung to her robes and to the stones around her. It looked like traces of forbidden magic. I dropped to my knees and hovered my hands over her but I couldn’t bring myself to touch her. A sob ripped out of me then I heard footsteps.

The next day, [Rina P.O.V] Seraphina returned at twilight with a girl in her arms. I was in the war room, poring over Thalassa's hydromantic charts with Aurel, when the door burst open with a gust of wing-breeze and the scent of rain. Seraphina stood in the frame, her golden feathers dulled to brass, her braid half-undone, her celestial armor - the light-mail she wore when expecting combat - scorched at the edges.

It was softer here — deeper greens, richer shadows, and that hum beneath the soil that made it feel like the trees themselves were listening. Ahead, near a natural stone arch wrapped in trailing ivy, a figure waited. Alone. No wolves flanked her. No weapons. No ceremonial garb. They reached the central atrium—and the sphere chamber, identical to the one beneath the rebel base. Only this one had been corrupted. Twisted red veins webbed across it, and suspended within was the child… eyes glowing, locked in some sort of energy cocoon. Ivy stepped forward, hand outstretched. “Mommy,” the girl whispered. The power surge knocked them all backward. Seraphina emerged from the shadows, draped in obsidian armor lined with glowing runes. Power radiated from her in waves. “I told you she’s mine,” she said. Ivy stood, blood at the corner of her mouth. “She’s not a weapon.”

I said, keeping my voice steady, “the threat’s gone down.” “Yes, Alpha,” Halvar said, nodding. “Which means... we don’t need the contingency plan anymore.” I knew what he meant. Seraphine. “We don’t have to use the girl as bait anymore,” I said, bluntly. Some of the nobles glanced at each other, surprised, but honestly, they looked relieved too. Nobody argued. Nobody ever did. Good. The meeting rolled on, almost over, then the doors eased open. Gina stepped in. She bowed, every movement perfect. She looked just like always, beautiful, put together,

Valefar was scared of Sera, but there was something else in those intense, amethyst eyes of his. Delight. Arousal. That was new. My master had never looked at Seraphine as though she was anything more than a fancy gun with his finger hovering over the trigger. Ever since she turned eighteen, it was like she was reborn anew in the eyes of everyone. It disgusted me. “Diana,” Valefar’s voice stole my attention. “Bring Sera back to her room. I’ll select a mate without her.” “Of course, Master,” I bowed my head to him and started to help Seraphine up.

The shadows coalesced into a figure at the top of the stairs—a woman cloaked in deep crimson, her eyes glowing like coals. “You shouldn't have come here,” she said, her voice echoing unnaturally. “The balance must not be disturbed.” Aria stepped forward, her voice unwavering. “Who are you?” “I am Seraphine, last of the Moonbinders. Guardian of the Crown. And I will not let it fall into unworthy hands.” Damien snarled, baring his fangs. “We’re not here to steal it. We want to end this war.” “The war was fated,” Seraphine said. “Only one marked by betrayal and love can choose the fate of the crown.”
