Their movements were slow and careless, like they had forgotten the world outside this place. On the glass table in the middle were bottles, glasses, and small white powders arranged in thin lines. A man leaned over the table, laughing loudly before bending down to inhale something through a rolled bill. A man and a woman were making out in one corner. I quickly looked away, feeling embarrassed. My stomach twisted. The man holding me tightened his grip as if he was proud to show me off. “Look what I found,” he shouted over the music. A few heads turned toward us.

The lights of Manhattan shimmered faintly beyond the glass windows of the exclusive restaurant. Soft jazz music filled the room while several well-dressed men sat around a long table, each holding a glass of wine. Richard sat casually at the far end of the table while loosening his black tie slightly. His expression remained calm as usual, even though his mind was not truly focused on the business conversation around him. “So...” one of the men beside him finally spoke with a quiet laugh, “are you really serious about that young girl?”

A huge chandelier hanging right above the dining table. She swallowed thickly when her gaze lingered on the man sitting at the head of the table. He was in a compression long-sleeved shirt and shorts going through his phone while chewing on his food. A girl stood beside him as she informed him about their meeting, she was in formal wear with two files in her hand and a notebook in which she was doodling out whatever he said to her. Feeling gaze on him his attention darted to her and Ava stiffened under his scrutiny. Now she knew he wasn't human and that fact alone shifted something inside her.

Zara's POV A few songs later the crowd around the table thinned out a little, and a guy stepped up with his hand stretched toward me. “Come down before you fall,” he said, smiling up at me. He had light brown skin and dimples and an easy kind of cute that didn’t feel dangerous. Grey hoodie, tall, the kind of smile that probably got him what he wanted most of the time. I took his hand and stepped off the table. My feet hit the floor a little harder than I meant, and he caught my elbow to steady me. The rum was still swimming in my head, but not enough to make me stupid. Not yet.

He bluffed and I pull him into my embrace. " Thank y.!" He crossed his fingers on my lips and brought me closer to the table with different dishes. He sat me on the chair but he didn't sit yet. " Ladies first" He wink, urging me to begin to eat. I swiftly brought my hand to the large covered plate on the table and my jaw dropped at the sight. It didn’t work, but I managed to keep it together, outwardly calm enough despite the sweat beading on my spine and under my arms. At last we made our way to where the apparent host held court at a larger cocktail table that’d been draped in silver lame and lit with a pale-blue spotlight. Gods. It was so tacky it distracted me from my panic and heartache for a full three seconds. But then Declan stepped forward, a few other people moving tactfully aside, to greet a tall, smiling brown-haired guy in a flashy tux who looked to be presiding over the tacky table. The way they hugged made my vision go green with jealousy. Fuck, Declan’s body language. Natural, if not super affectionate.

He continued piling various foods on my plate, stopping only when it was heaping with meat and sauce and bread, and then filled my glass with pale sparkling wine. I loosened a breath as he prowled back to his seat. He could probably hear my heart’s loud throbbing that I prayed to the Moon Goddess to return to its normal pace. I wanted nothing more than to bury my face in the plate and then eat my way down the table, but I pinned my hands beneath my thighs and stared at all those gathered in the Alpha's table.

"Yo, whatsup, boss!" But Nathan glared at her in surprise, how could he speak that language in this situation. Antonio didn't respond to the strange greeting either. He chose to sit on the sofa with Nathan and Carl, and Flo followed. They all now filled the long table in the center of the room. The table, made of transparent glass that was not covered by a cloth, was filled with various bottles of drinks and several cigarette butts that seemed to have filled the ashtray. Had they waited that long for Antonio to use up so many cigarettes?

My stomach growls. When we step into the living room, the sight nearly breaks me all over again. The long table is set — bowls of soup, bread still steaming, plates of fruit, and a pitcher of water glinting in the sunlight. Rowan stands behind a chair, arms crossed, trying not to look proud. Cassian sits at the head of the table, posture straight, eyes calm but rimmed red. “Sit,” Rowan says, gesturing to the chair beside him. “Before you faint and make me feel guilty.”

But I hold back the urge, force the saliva down my throat and hold my chin up, just like he told me to. The door reveals what looks like a business conference room. A giant round table at the centre is the highlight, sleek black chairs all around it. There are some LED strip lights hanging from the ceiling while the walls are nothing but gloomy grey. My mind is occupied, drinking in all the details when I realize we are not the only ones inside. To my left, the same young tattooed man from earlier is leaning against the wall, especially near the woman who is settled on one of the chairs around the table.
