It was an idealized image, but it was definitely supposed to be her. The drawing had long hair, feminine features, and every last detail and imperfection right down to her slightly-too-long nose and the exact shape of her cupid’s bow. Her head was turned to the side, revealing her neck. Her heart dropped into the pit of her stomach when she saw the series of small scars on her skin.

Sashi immediately ran back into her room and closed the door, though she still peeked out slightly to see whether Arlan would open it. Curious, Arlan unfolded the paper and saw a drawing made by Sashi. Bintang covered her mouth, holding back laughter at the drawing. Arlan turned to Bintang and held the drawing beside his face, as if comparing them. “Am I really this fierce?” Arlan asked Bintang, because Sashi had drawn him looking intimidating, with sharp eyes, an angry mouth, and a posture that looked furious. Bintang burst into laughter, completely amused, especially since Arlan was comparing the drawing to himself.

It wasn't as firm as before. "Maybe I can help you." I spoke in a softer tone, a tactic Klaus had used on me countless times and it always worked. "Maybe all you need is someone with a different view." Scarlett sighed and unlocked her cell phone, then handed it to me. It's a drawing of a dress in dark tones, the top is the one with the most detail for now. It's a bodice with a black background, but you can see the drawings of scales making an S from the left shoulder and outlining the body, where it looks like the dragon's tail is hiding behind. Beside me, Kael picked up one page. "What is this?" Aurelia looked at the drawing. "Oh." She sounded surprised he didn't know. "That's you." I looked at the page. Then at Kael. Then back at the page. The resemblance was questionable. At best. "I see." Aurelia pointed at another figure. "And that's Aria." I followed her finger. The drawing had considerably more hair than I actually possessed. "Very flattering." "Thank you." The response was immediate. As though I had complimented a professional artist.

When the rhyme vanished, a small window appeared next to the oven. There were five tabs above it. The first tab had a hair icon, the second a face, the third a torso, the fourth a sun wearing shades and the fifth a shirt. Kate clicked the Hair tab and she was presented with a whole gamut of men’s hairstyles: undercut, curly, layered, wave, Harajuku matted style, asymmetrical emo, mohawk, crew cut, man bun, spiky, flat top, dreads, Elvis…

My thoughts focused on every aspect of her appearance, from the way her hair moved when she turned her head to the way her jaw slightly clenched when I was being a smartass to the expression in her eyes when she laid down alongside me and ran her fingers through my hair, and I was able to capture all of these details in the drawing that I created. The first thing I saw was the way her cheek was pressed up against the pillow, and then I noticed her hair falling all about her. The edge of her T-shirt near her shoulder was created by the pencil as it flowed over the rough paper, and then the line of her neck was drawn next.

But it seemed her pencil had a mind of its own and what she’d drawn was not and could not in any way be construed as anime. She couldn’t really blame herself, though. Jack was all the things! His sharp jawline and those heavy eyebrows. The strong blade of his nose and the way his hair framed his face. He was an angel—or a devil, depending on where you stood on the evil vs. beauty debate. Seriously, Michelangelo would have wept to chisel Jack’s likeness from marble. Dianna couldn’t help drawing him how she saw him, and she already had ideas of how to incorporate his dragon into the portrait. No one else would even know the dragon was there except her…she didn’t think so, anyway.

I already said I'm weird. "I promise that all of this is waterproof," she drawls, taking a pencil and dabbing at my eyebrows. Dabbing? Poking? Drawing? Yeah, drawing in shallow streaks. Strokes. Whatever. "I'm gonna look so crazy." I twist my skirt in my hands. I'm pretty sure it's going to rip if I mess with it anymore. "Honey, you are gonna knock his socks off." She doesn't even stop for a beat. She's moved on to my lips, outlining and filling and blotting and all that.

That one stung. I brushed a stray curl from her cheek. “What are you drawing?” She hesitated, then flipped the page toward me. It was a sketch of three stick figures. One was tall with black hair, one with long brown hair, and one small in the middle holding both their hands. Ryan. Me. Her. My throat tightened. “That’s beautiful, Molly.” She shrugged. “I was bored.” Claire appeared in the doorway, arms crossed, that look on her face, the one that meant she’d been thinking about something serious.

Lily came back with the drawing before he left. It was a house, a big square with a triangle roof, the way all children draw houses, with a sun in the corner that had about sixteen rays coming off it. In front of the house there were three figures. The tallest one had what appeared to be a suit drawn on in careful crayon strokes. The smallest one had enormous hair. The middle one had, Lily had given it long dark hair and a yellow shape at the bottom of the page that I eventually understood was supposed to be a cardigan, My cardigan. The yellow one I wore on Tuesdays.
