The building was still as cold as they remembered. The corridors were silent to death. Dim lights add to the chillness of the walls. A certain odour lingered in the dark holes in the walls. It was a castle. But it seemed like nobody lived in it. A faint hint of blood entered Max's nostrils and he held his breath. It burnt his inside.

It pulses once, like a heartbeat. I swallow hard. Strange things have always happened when I’m upset, lights flickering, books falling, dreams that feel too real, but this feels different. Like the pendant is reacting to something out there. Or calling to it. The fog thins as we turn onto a narrow road lined with lanterns shaped like pumpkins. They sway even though there’s no wind. “Hallow’s Edge goes all out for Halloween,” Ms. Carter says cheerfully. “Biggest festival in the county. You’ll be here just in time.”

I only hope I don't have to be murdered in order for that to happen. Arlo drives me home and the moon follows us. I hate Halloween, what used to be costumes and fun. Is now fear, panic, and an asshole laughing in a Haunted House. Nothing is scarier than this Halloween. As Arlo squeezes my hand, I know I can face the demons and ghosts of tonight with him by my side. To make sure its not in my head, I squeeze his hand and he squeezes mine a little tighter bringing a little bit of happiness back with it.

Suddenly, Adrian realized that these individuals indeed harbored ulterior motives. Adrian expanded his awareness, and the sight before him left him speechless. The entire hall was now teeming with an array of ghosts and monsters. Among them were towering old men with only one eye, lanterns swaying on a single leg, malformed boys with just one limb each, women clad in white exuding a bone-chilling aura, and skeletal figures draped in human skin...

I wondered why. Now that I remembered, I had heard strange whispers inside the mansion the day three of us went there. It was the night of Halloween. Candice thought it would be cool and since there was no guard around that place, it was easy to sneak inside. But what we had seen had scared us all. In the dark, I had seen a pair of glowing red eyes approaching us through the dark inside the mansion. Candice and Jannet had escaped, but I had fallen on the floor.

They felt cold – so cold that they felt damp – and my fingers chilled further as I slid my hands into the chilled fabric. “The assembly,” he began, pausing to take a sip of the latte. “It’s weird that they didn’t cancel the normal Halloween celebration, let alone make it even bigger.” “And you think the demon had something to do with it?” Skye nodded. “We don’t know how, though. But we can make a good guess as to why.” “More people,” I sighed, rocking back on my heels, “means more places to hide amongst the crowd.”

“There are only three places here that match your description; it might help.” She sent pictures to my G***l, and one felt familiar, too familiar. “I think it’s the third; please take me with you; I need to go with you, and we need to go now; he might come for me tonight.” Fear laced my words, and although she sounded like she wanted to argue, she agreed. Hundreds of doorbells kept coming from the main entrance, each making my heart jump. It was Halloween night, and kids were coming for trick or treat; it was easier for the school to hide the fact that Rose was murdered under the disguise of Halloween.

In the morning, I would place an ad in the paper for someone to clean Miss Sally’s old house once a week, and Emily and I would discuss the window dressing for the upcoming holiday. The leaves were turning all sorts of browns and reds and winter was coming, but first we had Halloween and, as it had always been one of my favourite holidays of the year, I was feeling excited. It was going to be the best Halloween yet since this year … I had my own personal monster to escort me around town.

Part One: Eyes of the Wolf Jamie Dalton lifted the grocery bag filled with Halloween candy and took a moment to inhale the aroma drifting from it. For most people Christmas was their favorite holiday but Jamie had always loved Halloween. From the time she was nine years old she made up fanciful stories about the night, stories of goblins and ghosts and all manner of creatures. As she got older the stories became more intricate, the characters more detailed. By the time she was an adult she was weaving in erotic scenes and drooling over the heroines she created.

The sadness in her tone was heavy, matching the gloom of the ruins. I signaled the advance. If the outside looked neglected, the interior was a graveyard of memories. It was silent…..unnervingly so. How am I supposed to find the eldest woman in a ghost town? A heavy thud startled me. I spun around to see Novel sliding from Kitty’s back, hitting the dirt. I rushed to her side, my heart hammering against my ribs. I wanted to roar at the wolf, who at least had the grace to look guilty, but the sight of Novel’s pale, unconscious face silenced my anger.
