Today was October 31st in the human world, Halloween night. That evening, kids and young people in town wore all kinds of strange costumes and paraded through the streets. They lit candles and made wishes. The whole street was packed shoulder to shoulder, loud and lively. It was Seraphina's first time in the human world since losing her memory, and everything felt new to her. But when she remembered she had a mission, she forced herself to rein in her curiosity, even though her eyes kept drifting toward the festivities.

When Emmet had given Halloween as his favourite holiday, explaining to Jasper that it was when people placed decorations of pumpkins and bats outside their homes and give costumed children sweets when they approach and that it was a celebration of death and all the spooky things in the shadows, the spirits of people long dead finally returning to their families, and the oncoming harshness of winter.
