And all the kids cried out, "Please stop, you're scaring me" I can't help this awful energy God damn right, you should be scared of me Who is in control? I paced around for hours on empty I jumped at the slightest of sounds And I couldn't stand the person inside me I turned all the mirrors around - Control - Halsey I closed my eyes forcefully wishing that somehow everything would turn into just another strange nightmare, even fighting these different sensations caused by being in the arms of a monster.

Her rage was mesmerizing, the fire in her sky-blue eyes making her even more beautiful. As she continued to go off at me, I couldn’t hear a single thing she was saying. I was too caught up in her. Her lips, though spitting out curses, were the most luscious things I’d ever tasted. I casually placed my hands behind my back, trying to maintain a composed exterior, but inside, I was completely absorbed by her presence.

She whispers. "Me too." I say. "Come back to bed. It's still quite early. Plus, it's Sunday." She slips back into the duvets, pulling me in. I move back in and close my eyes. Hailee's P.O.V. I wake up feeling much better than yesterday. I check my phone and Halsey has sent me photos of herself. Plenty photos. I groan and think about my space. I turtle out of my bed and walk to the bathroom.

~ONE MONTH EARLIER~ The atmosphere was cold, despite the fact that the sun was shining high in the sky. Maybe it was because of the towering trees that shielded the lives beneath from the sun's warmth. It could have also been because the sun had just begun to take its place in the sky. Or maybe it was because of the emptiness in Mariana Rosette's heart. Mariana's horse trotted through the quiet woods. Her two companions also followed quietly behind her on their horses. No one said a word.

Halsey spoke from his heart. I listened to him carefully and could feel Halsey's regret. "Halsey, thank you and Abigail for everything you've done. I didn't expect things to turn out this way." Besides gratitude, I didn't know what else to say. Halsey smiled gently, "Cathy, you are my daughter. I would do anything to make you happy." I couldn't help but cry out loud. Suddenly, a silver sports car passed along the garden path and stopped at the entrance of the hall.

Just present, which is what this moment needs from him and which he seems to understand without being told. “Are you alright,” he says, quietly enough that only I hear it. “I keep being asked that,” I say. “Because we keep meaning it.” I look at him sideways. Something in my chest does the thing it has been doing, that quiet and unnamed settling, and I let it happen without cataloguing it. Halsey arrives at seven forty-three. She comes through the front door with Reth two steps behind her, and she takes in the kitchen — the documents on the table, Sera, Edrin, Talia, Bowen in his dressing gown with his tea — and she does not comment on any of it. She looks at me.

Suddenly, Whitney thrust a fist to her chest and sang the chorus with conviction. “Tell me how’s it feel sittin’ up there Feeling so high but too far away to hold me? You know I’m the one who put you up there Name in the sky Does it ever get lonely? Thinking you could live without me Thinking you could live without me Baby, I’m the one who put you up there I don’t know why (yeah I don’t know why.)” To Hollis, it sounded like she felt those lyrics. Singing along from experience rather than enjoying a popular break-up track. Once Halsey’s last verse faded away, Hollis gently turned the volume down so she could speak.

she whispered, though the words felt like a betrayal to everything she felt inside. Ethan smiled faintly, brushing his thumb across her cheek before pulling her into a gentle kiss. The warmth of his lips against hers sent a surge of emotion through her, and for a moment, the world around them disappeared. It was just the two of them, standing in the eye of the storm, clinging to each other in the face of the darkness. When they finally pulled apart, Ethan’s hand lingered on hers, their fingers intertwined. “We’ll get through this,” he said softly. “I won’t let him win.”
