Just grass and sky and an endless, pressing silence.
Then she saw him.
He emerged from the golden light like a sunrise given form, massive and terrible and beautiful beyond words. His fur was not white or black or brown but pure molten gold, each strand shimmering as if lit from within. His eyes were twin suns, blazing with ancient fire, and when he opened his mouth to breathe, the air itself seemed to tremble. He was not a wolf, not really. He was something older than wolves, older than shifters, older than memory. He was the First Wolf.
