I never got used to that moment, that stillness before they revealed themselves, when the very air seemed to wait.
And then he came.
The ground shook under hooves that weren’t really hooves but burning brands. His form was vast, a centaur made of living fire, his upper body shaped like a man’s but burning brighter than any flame I had ever known. His eyes glowed like deep pits of coal, endless and smoldering, staring at me even though I could not see them. I felt them, heavy as chains. The air roared around him, fire hissing with every breath he drew.
