That particular fic also delved into the prejudice angle in a way the books only hinted at with werewolves. The Ministry wanting to register him, rumors in the Daily Prophet, even some Order members being wary. It made the wizarding world's fear of 'the other' feel more personal and ugly, because now Harry's on the receiving end. The dark themes weren't just gothic aesthetics; they were about systemic bias and losing your place in a community that supposedly valued you.
