A shelf in the kitchen held small jars of spices, but rather than the usual garlic, pepper, or chili powder, the jars were labeled with things like Horehound, Solomon's Seal, and Myrrh. People scream and scurry away in fear, they are right to fear me, I am too angry to show mercy right now. Most of the entries were familiar types of magic—herbal mixtures, minor warding spells, protection charms, and potion recipes. The kind of practical witchcraft that most mages learned during their years at Rosewood. But I wasn’t looking for those. I flipped slowly through the pages, searching for anything that felt even remotely familiar. Anything that might explain the wings. Or the blood. It took several minutes before I found something.

Someone didn't want them to be extinct, so they created Morda and sent the creatures to live there. Dragons and beats and Ogre's. Dangerous creatures. Why would anyone want to save those animals?
