And standing guard around the edge of the black pool were the True King’s personal wardens. They were not standard Husks. They were four elite Shadow Wraiths entities composed entirely of dark smoke and ragged, freezing cloaks. They had no faces, only glowing, abyssal black voids beneath their hoods. They floated inches above the ice, holding long, wicked scythes forged from the same corrupted obsidian as the heart above them. I pulled myself back behind the archway, pressing my back flat against the freezing ice wall, my heart hammering a frantic rhythm against my ribs.

Their eyes burned with unnatural fire, and their snarls carried the weight of the damned. The Wraith called, his voice carrying across the cold air, smooth and poisonous, too calm. Raven stepped forward, her shadow wrapping around her shoulders like a cloak, her eyes burning gold. “This is our home,” she called back. The Wraith tilted his head, amusement flickering across his face. “Not for long.” Lightning flickered beside her as Ragnar stepped up, storm steady, his gaze locked on The Wraith. “You’ll have to go through us,” Ragnar said. The Wraith’s smile widened, slow and cruel. “That was the plan.” He lifted his hand, and a witch stepped forward, her eyes black as pitch, power curling around her fingers like smoke.

A shadow looms over me and Gwen lets out a muffled shriek. I spun, my magic zapping along my palms. I expect to see the vampires that Zane has recruited. Instead, it's an inky blackness that undulates in front of me. Taking a step back, I stumble as the thing drifts closer to me. "What is that?" my voice cracks. "It's a wraith." I'd vaguely heard of those, but why was Gwen so terrified of it? She had faced down half a dozen vampire ghosts, but trembles and backs away from this thing.
