Not food on my boot. I stopped, staring at my room, trying to find every piece of something familiar and kind. The books. I ran to the books, thinking about blood on boots as I ripped down the first bookshelf. I grabbed the back and pulled, letting it smash to pieces on the hard floor. Dandelion barked at me from my mattress when I went to the other, stepping over the books that had fallen. Pages had been torn out, dust jackets ruined. It didn’t matter. I would look at it and remember this day. I would remember what my father was.

“We burn them to start a new life. The ashes promote growth and new life. A new beginning for the animals. The next people that find this place will find beauty and calm. They will build happy memories and the air will be filled with laughter.” I wasn’t sure how long I held her, but when she finally pulled away, she was ready. Grabbing my hand, she pulled me back. Even bypassing the tunnel, she knew where she was going. Instead of helping, she pulled me to a fallen tree and sat down. We just watched as the guys took inventory and did what was needed. With my legs out straight, my ankles were folded. Brett seemed more relaxed, but was lost in her head. My phone vibrated in my pocket.

“Pish posh, we’re family.” Pish posh? I want to fight. Silas and Chase head straight to Carmen, who is vibrating with rage. Stephen looks even worse. “Bro, it’s not worth it,” I warn. He cuts me a glare. “What in the hell do you mean? It is worth it. If he steps over here saying anything slick, it’s on sight. He already got handed his ass in that alley. Round two won’t be pretty.” Good Lord. Now there are two angry Carters at this event. I’m counting to ten every five minutes. So is he.

I can't bear the thought of Hugh's dirty hands on her, his scent mingling with hers! As we circle each other, growls rumbling low in our throats, my mind churns with thoughts of vengeance - to kill! My attention flickers towards the intrusion, and there they are - the pack, rushing to Hugh's aid without a second thought.

Jamming the rod into the gap between the door and the frame, I pushed with all my strength. My arms burned, my hands ached, but I didn’t stop. Understood! I took a wood out of the floor and produced the book I had kept the flowers in. I opened the book in the middle and was relieved to see that it was still there.
