But the two women just laughed, the sound mocking and cruel.
“You think you can protect her from what’s coming?” the red-haired woman sneered. “You don’t even know the half of it.”
Just then, a loud crash sounded from somewhere deeper in the mansion. Maya’s heart skipped a beat. The entire atmosphere shifted, thick with a new, chilling presence.
Kael’s eyes flickered toward the door, then back to the women. “This isn’t over,” he spat, his voice low and dangerous. He moved toward the door, but just as his hand touched the knob, the sound of footsteps echoed from behind.
