At midnight, I gave up. I swung my legs over the side of the bed and stood up. The floor was cold under my bare feet. The moonlight came through the window, pale and silver, painting shapes on the walls. I opened my door and stepped into the hallway. The mansion was different at night. The shadows were deeper. The silence was heavier. The portraits on the walls seemed to watch me as I walked past them. Twelve women in white dresses. Twelve dead brides. Twelve pairs of eyes that followed me down the hall.

I asked. "Yes. Ghost appears here during night time and servants of the mansion see the ghost every full moon. I don't know if it's true or just a make-believe tale. Nobody really knows," he explained. I looked at the well for a few seconds then moved away, walking back to the path leading out of the woods. I can hear Alpha Jett's footsteps behind me. "Emma, don't come here in the woods alone again," he sternly warned me. "OK. I got it," I responded, walking faster towards the entrance to the woods.

"Why? The rejection would be fine if they don't mark each other." Becky shook her head. "That's not how it works with fated mates. Rejecting them weakens our wolf. Your pack would demand Jackson take his fated to prevent us from falling weak." I tried to shake off my unease. "What is that place?" Sandra asked, pointing to the eerie mansion in the distance. "It's the haunted mansion of the De' Luxe family," I explained. "Legend has it that a malevolent force wiped out the entire family. Some say if you stand by the iron gates, you can see an apparition of a grieving woman searching for her daughters."

Eyes filled with gratitude met Emma's, and the mansion's atmosphere seemed to sigh with relief.
