By late afternoon, the sun had dipped behind the rugged peaks, casting long, purple shadows across the valley. Kat made her way up the winding mountain path to find Adeline's home. Just as promised, it was impossible to miss—a grand, magnificent cabin built seamlessly into the surrounding forest using massive dark timber logs and stacked river stones.
Kat stepped up the broad stone steps and knocked firmly on the solid oak door.
It swung open almost immediately, revealing Adeline with a flour-dusted apron tied around her waist. "Kat! You made it. Come on in, step out of the chill!"
