Adeline popped in my head, and I rolled my eyes. Don’t think about it too much. Adeline grinned cheekily while I headed to the bathroom to shower. The smell of Dylan’s corpse stuck to me and I felt desperate to wash it off, knowing if it retained, I would most probably let him haunt me in my dreams. Moreover, Kaden seemed sure it was a vampire. But Adeline just kept smiling—a cold, empty smile. She picked up the fruit knife from the coffee table and plunged it into his chest. Over and over. "Anyone who toys with a true heart deserves to die." When her strength gave out, she collapsed to the floor, sobbing. Dark, blood-red liquid spilled from her lips as she opened her mouth. Then she fell still. Her eyes stayed open, staring at nothing.

I only knew it, the same as I'd known with the dying wolf in the woods. "Let me try," I heard myself say. The old Healer coughed from the floor, clutching his ribs. "Try? Girl, I have forty years in the craft and I couldn't hold him. You'll be dead before you reach the middle of the room." But Adeline was in the doorway now, both hands pressed white against her mouth, and her eyes were only on her son. Whatever else that woman was, the terror on her face was real. "Let her try," she whispered. "Please. Let her."

LUCIEN WOULD KILL HIMSELF!” He shakes Nikolai, still pointing at me. Then he gasps, and almost falls out of his chair. “LUCIEN WOULD KILL US! WHAT DO WE DO? WHAT DO WE DO?!!”

“Because the ritual failed, we now face the Progenitor’s punishment. The success rate for turning new members will drop. Our power to enthrall humans will weaken.
