“They will. And when they do, your world will burn.”
He lifted his sword, and black fire coiled around the blade. Edward lunged again, his weapon meeting the Commander’s mid-swing. The explosion of force sent both of them flying backward.
“Edward!” I screamed, running toward him.
He hit the ground hard, blood on his lips but eyes still fierce. “Finish it,” he rasped. “Now.”
The Commander turned toward me. Shadows surged from his hands, tendrils snaking toward my throat.
I reached inside myself, deeper than before—past the fear, past the exhaustion—until I found the core of the Heart. The rhythm steadied, a living heartbeat beneath my own. It didn’t just burn anymore. It called.
