She raised her hand in front of me excitedly and I put her ring on too. She took my hand and inserted the heart shaped diamond in my ring's hollow heart shaped socket. "When I went to the jewelry shop with Mom yesterday I saw this set and it reminded me of us. Individually they look like 2 incomplete pieces but when attached, they look like they would never separate, filling eachother's void." She took my hand and kissed over the ring.

"This is dead. It won't beat for you again. "We're finished. Your cousin was right. Chase is the one who matches your status. Let's just call it a bad dream. "The dream is over. I've paid my price. I accept it. "I wish you happiness." With that, I left the office. The moment I closed the door, I heard muffled sobbing from inside, restrained yet desperate. I felt nothing. I could not comfort her gently the way I once had when I saved her. I had underestimated how persistent Scarlett could be. To escape her, I requested a transfer out of the city with no set return date.

His voice trailed off as he talked about yesterday like nothing interesting happened. “I thought you wanted to check out all the trees at their different locations first?” He inquired with an unsure tone as looked for my hands with his eyes still on Asher and he squeezed them nicely, rubbing against them gently. “Yes I wanted to but I found the heart which usually takes weeks or months to locate. I know you wouldn’t understand but the heart is a deal breaker.” He explained as he looked thrilled talking about it. At that instant our eyes met as I looked up to notice his visage after hearing the excitement in his voice.
