The thing about heartbreak was you can’t see anyone other than the person that had hurt you. You can’t see how someone else looks at you because you’re blinded by the pain and betrayal from the past. You looked at everyone like they’re out to get you. Life becomes a series of black and white. Right and wrong. Good and bad. It’s bleak, lonely, and sad. Laughter becomes fleeting and happiness seems nonexistent. And though you appreciate the company and support the wound was still there. Someone may fill up the gap but it doesn’t heal the wound from the past.

Heartbreak. Cerise didn't realize that's what she's feeling at this moment. Tears stream down her face. Her stomach in twists, head buzzing and ears ringing. I’d noticed him eyeing it throughout dinner. “This is for you,” I said gently. “Always stay happy, sweetheart.” Amy looked at me, her eyes glistening with unshed tears. At that moment, I knew the wall between us had finally started to crumble. Luna and I watched as Amy and her son left. But as he steps back, his voice drops to a whisper. “I love you.” Then the mattress rises as he leaves, the soft click of the door the only sound in the quiet room. I sit there, gripping onto myself, forcing my breathing to slow. Only when I’m sure he’s gone do I finally let go. My entire body trembles as the dam inside me breaks. Heaving sobs rip through me, curling me into myself, choking me. I don’t know how long I stay like this—minutes, hours—until a gentle knock at the door pulls me from my anguish.

He looked at me hurt. "Mia," he began. "DON'T." I burst out, "DON'T YOU DARE! I SLAPPED THE GUY I LOVED BECAUSE OF YOU! I GOT MY HEART BROKEN BECAUSE OF YOU! DAMIEN IS LEAVING ME BECAUSE OF YOU!" I laughed humourlessly, "I was such a blind person." I held onto my hair tight, "such a blind person to not see this! Your true side...I always thought of you as the guy who could never harm anyone...BUT YOU ARE A MONSTER. HOW CAN YOU ENJOY PLAYING WITH PEOPLE'S FEELINGS. HOW CAN YOU BE SO RUTHLESS."

As the first faint, pale grey light of dawn began to bleed through the edges of the blackout curtains, Eve stared into the shadows of his room, her heart hammering a dark, chaotic rhythm that no equation in the world could ever fix.
