Man, I ended up on a weird internet spiral about this one after seeing a meme. The Deacon Mountain Alien story, at least the version I read on that one serial site, has this ex-geology professor, Dr. Elara Vance, who's the absolute heart of it. She's got that classic determined-but-broken thing going on, still haunted by a failed expedition. Then there's her kinda sketchy financier, Silas, who you're never sure is helping or exploiting her. The locals around Deacon are a whole mood too—the skeptical sheriff, the old-timer at the gas station who knows more than he lets on. But the real key, and this is where it gets fun, isn't just the human characters. There's this... presence in the mountain. It's not a 'character' in the traditional sense for a long time, more a force, but the way its influence warps the perceptions and relationships of the people in the town is the actual core dynamic. The sheriff starts seeing patterns in missing person reports he'd ignored, the old-timer's ramblings start making a terrifying kind of sense, and Elara's scientific certainty completely unravels. That unraveling is the best part.
Honestly, the alien itself is almost secondary. The story is about these broken people being pulled into its orbit, their flaws and secrets getting magnified. Silas's greed turns into something far more dangerous, Elara's trauma starts looking like a premonition. I read it more as a character study with a sci-fi horror skin than a straight alien encounter tale. The ending left me wondering if some of them were even really themselves anymore, or just echoes shaped by whatever was in that mountain.
