He was too scared to say a word even when his own wife was being offered up to serve the divine tree. … The next day, a few muscular men brought a sedan chair to the village before dawn broke on the horizon. According to the rules, the woman had to be blindfolded when she was delivered to the divine tree to prevent the location of the tree from being exposed. "Drink this, Hailey," David said as he offered me a bowl of black liquid. I took the bowl from him. The strong, herbal scent stung my nose. "What is this?" "It's to calm your nerves, so you won't feel as much pain later," David explained with bright eyes.

A sharp pain shot through my bones, making me wince and clutch the bed sheets. As the pain grew more intense, I became aware of Elsie’s presence once more, this time her voice soothing like a cool breeze. “It’s alright, Bella. This is the transformation,” she whispered. “It will pass soon, and then you’ll understand. You’ll be stronger, faster, and more powerful than you could have ever imagined. And you’ll be connected to me, forever.”

She thought she had him cornered. Ryan guided Vennessa into the room, his stride confident and unhurried, with Elaine walking just a step behind them. As they reached the center of the floor, the overhead lights dimmed slightly, signaling the start of the formal legacy foundation announcements. Victoria stepped up to the microphone, her smile radiant and utterly venomous. "Good evening, ladies and gentlemen," Victoria’s voice echoed beautifully through the hall. They all looked confused. “Zane and I are going to have a baby,” Ava told them, and after a second of dead silence, chaos erupted. Gabriel flung himself at Ava, giving Zane a heart attack. Gabriel hugged her too tight for Zane’s liking, but he couldn’t do anything about it as he had been surrounded by Jax, Tom and Ryder who were shaking his hand, slapping him on the shoulder and congratulating him. He did his best to thank them as he kept an eye on his angel. Linda and Samantha had joined Gabriel in congratulating Ava.

A broken part of my soul found its way back, piece by piece, in the safety of her arms. She apologized for everything that I had endured. For leaving me. She also told me how proud she was of me. How she believed that I’d make an amazing Luna. Dad joined the embrace but reminded Mom that they apparently didn’t have long. She smiled sadly and looked at me. “The Goddess granted me permission. A car came to a halt in front of the cabin, and Mariah quickly jumped up on her feet “My husband is here," she declared proudly. Mariah's husband alighted from the car and walked humbly into the cabin.

You may speak with the Moon Goddess.” Someone from the corner of the room began to speak.

There were hushed mumbles from the crowd. “It is true,” said the queen, and I almost found myself believing her. “We are not demons from a fiery realm of torment, as some have accused us of being. We are the children of Heaven.” “The children of Heaven!” repeated the tallest priest. “Amen!” There was a cry of “Amen!” from the people—and in spite of all that I’d seen, I felt a desire to join them.
