Fury was a pup from Jackson’s own Hellhound, so they were just getting quality time with their hound grandparents. Hellhound pups were fucking awesome. They were so energetic and had that lovable puppy shit that made them adorable as hell. However, they could easily burn someone alive. Their entire species was very intelligent, so it was not a surprise that the pups would be as well. They took to training so damn quickly, following their parents around to learn all about being a Hellhound. Had you ever seen a puppy who was letting you rub its belly one minute and at full attention with its flames out to eliminate any threat the next? Well, I did. I catch glimpses inside the doors, confirming my suspicions that these are indeed homes. I make it further through the tunnels, where they split in different directions and I pick one at random, winding past more doors until the tunnel like space opens up further, becoming wider and taller. I drop the last ladder as my boots land on the floor. I find dry land and put him there. “I can't fight what I am,” he whispers. “I can't.” A tear slips down his cheek. He looks immaculate even with our present situation. The scent intensifies again, but now it's thick, sweet, and heavy. Above us, the hounds start barking, the Omega heat has peaked, and boots slam against the pavement. Voices shout commands out to the hounds. They are genetically engineered wolves bred by the academy, creatures that can smell a drop of blood.

"Put the gun away and back off." He doesn't move, so this time, I take him by the arm, easing him backwards. The pitch is low. Whatever's producing the sound is big. As we retreat a few steps, the owner of the sound emerges. And he's a whopper. Black, with ginger face markings and eyebrows, this dog could be cast as 'Hellhound of the Year'. A Rottweiler, he crouches, body hanging low, ears laid flat back. His eyes are white-rimmed and his lips pulled back to display ranks of pristine teeth.

If I hadn’t seen their mother, I would have thought they were young Labradors. “They’re really cute,” I said, my head tilting to the side. “Hellhound pups don’t become dangerous until they're three months old,” Rocco said. “Up until then, some of the adults mistake them as prey. That’s why we’re keeping Bonnie and her litter separate from the others.” “How long have you been taking care of Hellhounds?” I asked.
