Betrothed
Too well.
I felt my stomach twist again, nausea creeping up as I remembered Adam’s voice over the phone, the words spilling out as though once they’d started, he couldn’t stop. He had called to reach out, to share what he thought I deserved to know. And then he had told me everything—the ugly, brutal truth that shattered any last bit of childhood innocence I might have clung to. My mother and Adam had been in love, deeply so, enough to want a future, a family. But Sophia had gotten in the way. For whatever reason—envy, control, or something far darker—she had driven them apart, separating them before they even had a chance to be what they were meant to be.
