Secrets of the Ash Princess
He glanced at my bloody hand, then back at my face.
“The stone was old, Magister,” Kaka said. His voice was quiet and low, but everyone in the silent yard heard him clearly. “It has been used for three generations. It broke because it was worn out, not because some weak Tier One girl has special power.”
When he said the word *error*, I caught a tiny, quick twitch in Kaka’s jaw. He was lying. He didn’t believe his own words, but he needed the crowd to buy it. Maybe he wasn’t trying to save me at all. Maybe he just wanted to stop the whole academy from panicking. Or maybe he wanted a reason to find out what I could really do. Either way, his lie gave me an opening.
