[Juliet's POV] Deep into the night, I crouched on the city wall, handing energy crystals over like a machine. Alison waved her hand impatiently. "Hurry up. Quit dawdling. You're gonna drag everyone in this city down with you if you delay my progress with fortifying the walls." I remained silent as I handed another crystal to her. On the faint golden protective shield—visible only to me—the cracks spread wider and wider. All of a sudden, a ten-foot-tall mutant zombie thrust its arm right through the lightning and protective barrier. With an effortless slash with its sharp nails, it stumbled its way inside.

The more these totems appeared, the stronger the blood energy on her. “Ah! She’s mutating!” the man shouted in shock. “Is she turning into a zombie? This is a contagious virus, right? This must be some kind of zombie virus! Oh God, oh God! Are the zombies going to take over our city?” “You watched too many sci-fi movies!” said Alex. He turned to Steel Tower and said, “Ask him to leave and shut his mouth. Don’t let him spread rumors!” Steel Tower asked, “Boss, do I have to kill him?”

The night before the apocalypse was so calm it felt suffocating. I stood in front of the bunker's observation window made from bulletproof glass and watched dark red rain pour down outside. It was unusually thick with the metallic smell of blood. The news kept cutting in with one grim emergency report after another. "Unexplained mutated rabies attacks have broken out across multiple parts of the city. Residents are advised to stay home and keep all doors and windows closed..." The reporter's voice shook despite his effort to hide it, and faint, piercing screams came from somewhere behind him.

My consciousness faded to black. My body leaped in a heap as sparks flew from my arm through the rest of my body, erasing the pain from my limbs and torso. I gratefully panted, surprised I was still living. What just happened? As my body heaved breaths I never knew I'd be able to take again, movement to the left caught my eye. Squinting to see in the moonlight, the movement swirled around, making me dizzy. What is going on? As if on cue, the shadows came out from the trees and into a patch of moonlight. The glistening black fur of Nathan's wolf and the ghastly sight of a raging vampire rolling and fighting in a heap made me realize what was going on again.

My howls turned more agonizing as I went into a bad place. And then, miraculously, the wolf stopped as his entire body came crashing down on top of me. I yelped from the impact of a grown man’s full weight hitting my body. Once I recovered, I opened my eyes to see Alex holding an entire bloodied vertebral column with his claws, clearly ripped from the wolf’s body. I instantly pushed the dead man off me and sprinted away as Alex threw the vertebrae away and held off the other three wolves, one of whom looked like he wouldn’t get too far as a bloody puddle formed under him and he eventually turned human, dropping to the ground.

I was nothing more than a surrogate they hired. Their original plan was to stress me out with a diet of high-cholesterol meat and the grief of losing loved ones, hoping I would die in an accident and they could inherit my dad's fortune and cash in on a fat insurance policy. However, when I jumped from the upstairs and ended up in a coma, only to wake up soon after, they panicked about being found out and crafted a fake reality around me, a true Truman Show. In the sterile quiet of the hospital room, the past year's nightmare played out again. They pumped me full of drugs that twisted reality, convincing me I was given a second chance at life.

He was stronger, faster, and sharper than he had ever been. As he entered a long corridor, a faint noise behind him caught his attention—a rasping breath and the scrape of claws on the floor. Its milky eyes gleamed with a hunger that made Luke’s stomach twist, but he didn’t back away.
