If I was going to think about something, it needed to be far from their piercing eyes. I walked over to the bookshelf, my fingers gliding along the spines, looking for anything to distract me. But then, a flashy cover caught my eye. A pear surrounded by three bananas. The title was suggestive, and just reading the blurb was enough to get it: reverse harem. A new subgenre that was gaining popularity. I swallowed hard. Was the universe mocking me? On impulse, I grabbed the book and hid it behind a few others on the shelf. I’d come back for it later, alone, and take it to my room. To cover my tracks, I picked up a random poetry book.

I ask, completely confused. "The book. Hidden edges."

The complete volume of the World Almanac on the top row, varying books about business and commerce on the middle, and a compilation of untitled white leather-bound books on the bottom. The white books caught my attention quickly. Weird. It looked specifically custom-made. I was almost tempted to open one of them when I found a familiar-looking book placed singularly at the far corner of the shelf. It was bound using black lamb skin. The title written on the spine made me frown as I read it. ‘The God’s Emerald Eyes.’

This whole place was starting to look like a maze. “I just have to get out of here soon,” he mumbled to himself. He wasn’t a fan of books, but he was going to do all he could to make sure that he found the truth. Finally, he settled on 4 big books that were laced with images of tree monsters. They were actually a thing, and it was crazy that no one had realised this till now. He pulled the books to the nearby table and dumped them on it. One had a lock, and he skipped that since he didn’t have a key. Focusing instead on the other smaller books.

Why in the world did he have all of these for? My fingers danced along the spines of the book in curiosity. I pulled out each book slightly, hoping like my library one of them would reveal some secret compartment. I stopped as one book caught my attention. It didn’t feel solid like the other books. It was too light. “Penn, I think I’ve got something.” I pulled it out. It was a black book with no title. I opened it to discover it was a hollow book. A velvet box, slightly smaller than the book, was hidden inside of it. I opened the box and smiled.

I didn’t hesitate. I pulled Fifty Shades of Grey first (cliché, yes, but I needed an entry point), then The Claiming of Sleeping Beauty by Anne Rice, Story of O, a slim volume called The New Topping Book just to balance it out, and two anthologies with titles like Bound Hearts and Surrender to Me. The stack felt heavy in my arms, like contraband. I carried them to the my corner and hid them under the table. I sat down, and opened the first book.
