Her drawing. It was a charcoal sketch of the old oak tree that had stood behind the school, the one she’d hidden under during lunch. She remembered this piece. It was one of her best from senior year. She’d poured her loneliness into the sweeping lines of the branches, her fragile hope into the dappled light on the grass.

I opened it carefully and began flipping through pages. The writing was old, uneven, faded in some places, but the words were still clear. My eyes moved slowly over the first page. A bond of two natures… I frowned, turning the page. Born of great magic and sacrifice. My stomach tightened. “What does that even mean…” I murmured quietly. Then I opened another page. Then I saw a drawing on it. It looked familiar as I leaned closer, staring. A woman, clearly a witch by the robes and symbols around her, was standing over two wolves lying on the ground, as strange lines of magic seemed to curl and swirl around them.

For a little guy, he is way too good. There are all different kinds of drawings that are too neat, I shuffle through them, trying to find one to stick on our fridge in the kitchen. I smile to myself when I come across a picture of him and I then there's Jasmine and even Alex, with and without devil horns— that makes me laugh. I pass by other boyish things, like cars, dragons, dogs, dinosaurs and ninjas, lots and lots of them.

The massive tension from yesterday had completely vanished. Lily finished her roasted chicken. The five-year-old wiped her mouth carefully with a napkin. She picked up her blue notebook from the placemat. Lily turned the open notebook around and pushed it slowly across the smooth wood toward Aurora. Aurora looked down at the fresh white page. It was a highly detailed pencil drawing of the tall chain-link school gates. The sharp lines were incredibly precise and perfectly shaded.

I flipped the next paper, and froze. I looked over at him sleeping soundly on the bed and looked back at the drawing. Why would he draw this? It was an image of a lady with a red cloak. He had colored her with red. Then she was surrounded by green bushes. There were small rocks around the area. But what caught my attention the most, was his illustration of the pool of blood on the floor and a small child drowning in it. It was definitely the nightmares. I flipped through the other papers and saw other strange but similar drawings. A red eyed owl. An old house. And the last one was a drawing of an ancient Greek symbol. I couldn't place what it was.

Which brings me to my master plan. Lucas raised an eyebrow, leaning over my shoulder as I began to draw furiously. "Your master plan?" "Yes," I said proudly, tapping the paper. "Look." I drew a small, stick-figure crown sitting on top of a giant head with angry eyebrows. "This is me… playing you." Then, I drew a row of tiny little monsters at the bottom of the page with jagged teeth, horns, and tiny pitchforks. "These are your court ministers and Lord Brandon. They're basically demons."

Priya unfolded it slowly, and laid it on the table. It was, exactly as she’d described, a child’s drawing. Rough lines, the kind only a very young child draws, a square house with a triangle roof, smoke coming from a chimney in careful zigzags, and outside it, standing in a row, six small stick figures, each one slightly different, each one clearly meant to be a specific person even though none of them had faces drawn in. Underneath, in careful, uneven child’s handwriting, the words Priya had quoted.

“Mommy, Daddy, look!” Thomas turned off the stove, wiping his hands on a towel before crouching down to her level. “Let’s see this masterpiece.” Lily carefully held up the paper. The dragon she had drawn was big and colorful, with red wings, yellow flames, and a green tail. It was messy, with crayon lines darting everywhere, but it was full of heart. “Wow,” Thomas said, his voice filled with awe. “That’s the coolest dragon I’ve ever seen.”
