Dark of Night Copyright 2019 Emily Goodwin Chapter One “What do you see when you look at this one?” The doctor holds up a card, showcasing an ink splotch that’s twisted and creepy, with eyes that follow you no matter where you go. I look at it, heart hammering away inside my chest. The mess of ink on the white paper reminds me of the monster that lurks in Nana and Papa’s basement, the one that tried to get Abby and Scott to go downstairs with it.

I rounded a corner, turned left down a tighter row, and— Stopped. There, nestled between two massive grimoires, was a book that didn’t belong. It was smaller, wrapped in black hide, no title. A circular crest gleamed faintly on the cover, a silver wolf’s head bisected by a black sword, the same we saw in the tunnel the other day. I knew that crest, its Blackwood sigil. My lungs tightened. My hand moved before my brain could catch up. I pulled the book free. Dust billowed, I coughed hard.. My heart beat faster.

I took the knife from the drawer and cut my wrist over the chest so my blood could fill Yggdrasil, I watched as it filled up, congealed and then the lid lifted. I took the lid off and then I did a small searching spell. I moved the chest behind my desk so it was also hidden by my chair. I didn’t have time to go through every book, I just wanted to know what the black outs were and if there was anything I could do about it. I closed my eyes and reached into the chest and took the book out. I opened the book and I immediately saw the word ‘black out’. I sat down on the couch and put the lamp on and started reading.

The rest of the busy room always seemed to blur into static whenever he looked at me that way. Dangerous. Very dangerous. Harmony suddenly gasped, her fingers tightening violently around her books. "Oh my God." I shifted my stance away from her. "What now?" She pointed a rigid finger toward the heavy book still sitting on the shelf between us. "The creepy history book." I followed her gesture, my pulse quickening slightly as I read the faded gold lettering on the spine: The Founding Families of Black Hollow. Right. The entire reason I had wandered over to this dusty section in the first place.

Evans also said something like that. “Hmm,” Hazel hummed and replied, “You said it right. Just like the way Christ died to redeem humans from sin, the Chosen One has to make a sacrifice like that to redeem the night creatures. But," Hazel suddenly said, raising a finger, “the witch who tapped into the black magic found something that interests the Vampires especially.” Amber sat up in the chair, anticipating on hearing more about it. It was surprising that a while ago, she was bent on leaving the bookshop and then the next minutes, she found herself being absorbed in the story that Hazel now told her.

“I fell asleep after dinner. At least, I think I did. And I had this… dream.” She pauses, chewing on her lip. “At first, I thought it was just stress. Everything that’s been happening. But then…” She looks down at her hands. “I blacked out.” That makes me still. “I came back when Holly was calling my name,” she continues. “I was outside. In the Shadow Woods. Right where Felix and that other girl…” Her voice tightens. “I could smell the blood. It was still there. So much of it. Even after the Raven Hollow pack took her body away.”

I slipped behind a broken section of wall, pressing myself flat against the stone. The footsteps passed. Two guards. Running. Running. That never happens. Guards don’t run. Not here. Not unless something is very wrong. I waited. Counted slowly in my head. Then I stepped out again. But this time… I didn’t go deeper. I turned back. Because something told me— Whatever was happening tonight… I wasn’t ready for it. Thorne POV The first wolf came from the left. Fast. Silent. Wrong move. I twisted just as it lunged, my claws tearing through its throat mid-air. Blood sprayed across my chest as its body crashed beside me.

A thought that wouldn’t go away but over time it grew teeth. I couldn’t stay hidden forever, hiding felt like slowly fading away. So I started moving again. I followed whispers. A woman selling dried roots spoke of a witch who lived deep in Black Hollow, surrounded by thorns, guarding things no one should touch. A half-starved rogue muttered about a book with red-stained pages he’d glimpsed in her hut years ago. That night, I didn’t sleep. I gathered what I needed in silence… nightshade berries crushed into a dark, sticky paste; valerian roots pulled from wet soil under the thin light of the moon; the last pinch of sleep-dust I’d traded for months ago from an old woman on the trail.

The book of forbidden magic was still in her hands, so I reached for it, but Shantel grabbed it first, moving faster than the speed of light. “This is what you came for?” She asked, raising the book in the air. “It's not what you think.” I tried to explain but a sharp growl cut me off. Words paused in my throat as a gigantic black wolf stormed into the library, its eyes glowing red like the blood moon on Eclipse night. Everyone stumbled back, including the council women, surprised by the sudden appearance of what I believe to be a Rogue, or better said, the king of Rogues. It growled loudly and thunderously, making my heart jump.

The runes ignited, one by one, in violet fire. The air thickened. Wind howled. The soil trembled beneath their feet. And then—the altar cracked open. A blinding surge of light shot upward, tearing through the mist. The ground split, and a small obsidian chest rose from within, glowing faintly red. Inside lay a single black-bound book wrapped in silver chains—the Book of the Damned. Kael stepped forward slowly. “After all this time…” He reached toward it— —and the forest screamed. A flare of silver light cut through the trees as figures emerged from the mist—The Order. Dozens of cloaked hunters, blades drawn, crossbows gleaming with runes.
