He doesn’t wait for a reply and walks off. Zylith comes over to me taking my shaking hands into her steady ones. “Are you okay?” I quickly nod yes, “He scares me, I didn’t feel this scare with Cain and his people.” Zylith gives me a soft smile. We go to the study after putting on our shoes and a jacket. Alucard is standing with a book in hand but doesn’t glance up, he already knew we were coming. He closes the book with a loud echo and with the wave of his hand he lights up the fireplace. I try not to show my obvious fear and wonder at it.

**Homecoming** The familiar scent of home—the faint aroma of Claire’s lavender candles, the comforting smell of old wood, and the lingering hint of last night’s rain—filled the air as the Hayes family finally stepped through their front door. Despite the exhaustion from the relentless chase and the constant threat looming over them, the warmth of their home brought a fleeting sense of safety. For the first time in what felt like ages, they were back where they belonged. But the sanctuary of their home was tempered by the reality of the battles still ahead.

I’ve learned more about Lycan biology in the last hour than I did in all my years in Molbor. They’re intriguing, even if I still find them barbaric. I close the green book in my lap and sigh. We both got inside the car and he drove off without another word on the matter. By the time we finally arrived back at the pack house, I was exhausted and very hungry. Every part of my body felt heavy and worn down. But aside from all of it, I was relieved that I had finally made it back in one piece. That alone felt like something worth holding onto. All through the drive back, I had been reading the Book of Shadows, going straight to the chapters that talked about crescent wolves and pure blooded wolves. I read every word carefully, turning each page slowly, making sure I didn't miss anything.

But he wasn’t. After moments of thick silence, Caitlin couldn’t take it anymore. She had to know. “Is it real?” she asked, cutting right to the chase. After a long silence, Aiden finally turned. And slowly, he nodded. Caitlin couldn’t comprehend what was happening. He was confirming her reality. This book. It was real. Everything was real. “But how is that possible?” Caitlin asked, her voice rising. “It talks about the most fantastical things. Vampires. Mythical swords. Shields. Antidotes. It’s thousands of years old—and it’s all in my handwriting. None of it makes any sense.”

She wondered why he had helped her, why he had put his life on the line for her. “Because I’m of your kind,” he said, turning and looking right at her, his piercing blue eyes boring through her. Caitlin always forgot how easily vampires could read each other’s minds. But for a moment, she had forgotten that he was one of hers. “Not all of us fear churches,” he said, answering her thoughts again. “You know that our race is splintered. Our kind—the benevolent kind—need churches. We thrive in them.” As they turned down another corridor, down another small flight of steps, Caitlin wondered where he was leading them. So many questions raced through her mind, she didn’t know what to ask him first.
