"Why would I want to discuss cats?" She returned my low growl. "Your female cats are ashamed of their beast. It's ingrained from birth. Have you noticed the women and baby don't shift?" I hadn't paid attention, but now, thinking of it, what she said was true. "And I'm supposed to change this?" I walked a foot closer. "How?"

I trudge up the stairs to our third-floor apartment, shove my key in the lock, and step into the mayhem. "KATHERINE!" Audrey squeals the second I open the door. She jumps around, still in her pajamas. I glance over at Dan lounging on the couch. "Dan, did you let her finish off the entire bottle of champagne while I was gone?" I tease. "Oh, shush Kat, I am fine," she tells me then points to the still half full bottle on the counter. "Mhm," I tell her looking at Dan. He gives me a what-are-you-going-to-do shrug.

I asked slowly, turning my head toward Maureen with disbelief written all over my face. Maureen didn’t even try to hide her grin. “That’s her husband,” she said casually. “He ain’t leaving nowhere.” I stared at her. Then at the cats. Then back at her again. “Wow,” I muttered slowly. “Wow.” I bit into my lower lip, staring at the two cats like they had personally betrayed me. Traitors. Every single one of them. Before I could continue my silent war with the animals, a soft fussing sound pulled my attention toward the crib.

She whimpered and spoke low enough that he was not sure what she said. “Shhhh shhh.” He soothed against her hair. “I’m here, babe. I’ve got you.” One of the cats got on his chest and nuzzled her cheek. He then laid down on Knuckles chest between her neck and arm and began to purr. As always, the other two followed. Anyone that said cats were aloof, unfeeling and detached, had never seen cats as a familiar to a witch. Nessie would never call them familiars. Just as she would never call herself a witch. But in all honesty, that is exactly what they were.
