I was sure. I sighed and flipped it open again, running my fingers across the stiff old pages. The writing inside was tiny, neat, and definitely older than anything I had ever seen in Father’s library. Each chapter had illustrations of different beasts, creatures I’d only heard whispers of. Gargoyles, gnomes that were alive, serpent women and even sirens. None of these existed though… or did they? I could feel my head throbbing from an oncoming headache so I just shut the book and stared at the ceiling of my room.

Suddenly, a gigantic figure emerged. A troll. It was massive—ten feet tall with skin like cracked granite. Its eyes were hollowed pits glowing faintly blue, and its tusks jutted from its mouth like jagged scythes. It had been sleeping in the tunnel’s belly, curled beneath roots like a corpse. We’d woken it and it was annoyed.

It’s an evolved troll with three horns, the highest and strongest in their species.

Termâs called down from the tower to the waiting soldiers. A loud clear horn call rang out and the soldiers all came to attention. From across the wide tar-filled moat, a line of mountain trolls began to move forward. They wielded clubs, swords, and axes. The first line fell into the dust-covered tar and began to scream. Another group that was equipped with ropes and hooks followed this line. The hooks came flying up the walls and the Menian soldiers quickly ran to the hooks and threw them down or cut the ropes. Menian archers loaded their bows and began to fire arrows down at the trolls. The thick skin of the beasts made it nearly impossible for the arrows to penetrate their flesh.

“What are we talking about?” “What’s got Jackson so sullen this morning.” I declared. Clearing my throat and finding my fork to attack my eggs. “Perhaps I’d not be so sullen had I gotten more sleep last night.” “Oh?” I feigned a worried look. “Restless sleep.” “Awake much of the night.” He said flatly. “Kept up late by the crashing around of trolls, I suspect.” “Trolls?” Archer queried. “They’ve been sneaking into the bailey at night to raid the baker’s carts.” Roger explained.

The trees swayed distorted. The rogue leader's jaws snapped mere inches from my face. I countered with a swipe of my claws, ripping the rogue leader’s ear. The rogue howled, enraged. I seized the opening, delivering a crushing blow. The rogue leader immediately crumpled, defeated. The remaining rogues rushed to me but it was easier for me. My claws singled around, cutting their heads, tails, and ears. The smart ones among them ran with one of their body part missing while the rest stayed to be killed completely.
