Honey. My smile fades. I froze to the word honey. He's calling someone honey. Honey is a term of endearment. Of course it had to be someone special. It won't be his mom, would it? Is he taken? Is he dating someone? Oh my God, I didn't know he's taken. Why am I feeling sad? Why am I feeling depressed when I heard him calling someone honey over the phone? Jesus Christ, of course he has a girlfriend. "I'm having dinner with a friend. Yes I'll be back home tomorrow I promise. Mom's fine, don't worry." Hugo gazes at me but I kept my eyes on my foods.

Jade answered on the first ring. “Hey, bestie!” Jade’s excited voice burst through the speaker. “Thank God you’re alive.” Honey laughed and rolled her eyes. She had missed Jade’s chaotic energy. “Come on, Jay doesn’t bite,” Honey said through laughter. “He’s just a proud lion.” Jade laughed. “I thought he would have eaten you alive and chewed your bones.” Honey smiled. “Girl, I was so scared when I saw those guns earlier. My whole life flashed before my eyes. I’m sorry I chickened out,” Jade said, and Honey could already imagine her pouting.

“Wake up, bro. Kid isn’t even here for you to claim lack of sleep for your slacking.” I shook my head and focused on stringing up the white and yellow streamers that went with the honey bee theme Pam and Hana decided on. I don’t think Hana gets the joke the same way I do. In the last decade, Pam has commented more than once about Winnie the Pooh and his bottomless hunger for honey compared to my hunger for her. Let Hana and everyone else think it’s just a cute baby thing or that Pam’s number on pregnancy craving has been honey. She puts that shit on everything… and I mean everything.

She didn't have to wait for her replies because she already replied. I was good ten minutes away from that man I could feel it , He would come find me . A car light flashed across my eyes making me blind of seconds . The car door opened as I heard footsteps . Who is the person to give all this? “Hazel, pride of my mansion! I am pleased to see you. Good morning, how did you sleep, huh?” Honey was dripping from her tongue but alas, the honey was mixed with sugar. Something fake and indigestible. “Come here, we’ve got a big deal and I want to go there and take care of my customers, as we know how beautiful you are…” she threw a fake smile in her direction. Like always!

Yet. Honey and mossy (what I have named them, due to eye colors) stood huddled on the other side of the dungeon corridor, their voices too low to hear. Honey then stepped back into my cell and did the same thing as mossy, stuck his nose in my hair, and took a big whiff scenting me. When he stepped back, he too had a look of bewilderment on his face, his eyes curiously scanning me. Then he went back to stand with his friend. “I don’t see how it’s possible,” Honey said, this time not as quiet.

But he had chosen to leave, to disappear, and to hide in the shadows while I ate his food and read his words and tried to make sense of a man I did not understand. I picked up the bread and tore off a piece, and the warmth of it spread through my fingers and into my chest. I dipped it in the honey and put it in my mouth, and the sweetness filled my tongue, and I closed my eyes and tried to remember the last time I had eaten something that tasted like this. The honey was rich and golden, with a floral undertone that reminded me of summer, of flowers, and of warmth that had nothing to do with fire.

Like someone trustworthy. “Okay. Hundred percent transparency. I can do that”, he extends his hand out for a handshake, and she takes it. There it is again. What was this?
